The Yokohama Landmark Tower

The Yokohama Landmark Tower is the tallest building in Japan, standing 295.8 m high. The architect was Stubbins Associates. It is located in the futuristic Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama city, right next to Yokohama Museum of Art. The building was finished in 1993. The building contains a five star hotel which occupies 49 to 70 floors. The lower 48 floors contain shops, restaurants, clinics and offices. The hidden 71st floor contains two tuned mass dampers on opposite sides of the building to reduce sway. The Yokohama Landmark Tower has a flexible structure to absorb the force of earthquakes which have never collapsed enduring series of earthquakes. It is interesting that the construction method of ultra-modern skyscrapers is similar to the techniques fostered in Japan’s long history of wooden “high-rise” architecture. It also has a horizontal escalator . Underground parking (1400 stalls) is available at the tower. The best views are found overlooking the east side. While some towers are light ethereal things with little substance, this tower should only be introduced as the world’s most manly tower.
