The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. This building was designed by A.C. Norman and built in between 1894 to 1897. A.C. Norman gets idea to design this building when he saw Muslim mosque in India which led him to used Moorish architecture for this building's design. This building was topped by a shiny copper dome and a 40 meter high clock tower. It is a major landmark in the city. It serves as the backdrop for important events such as the National Day on August 31 and the New Year. Many historical events had been held in front of this building. Among them was the declaration of independence of Malaysia on 31 August, 1957 and the lowering of the Union Jack flag. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building now is the houses of the Commercial Division of the High Court of Malaya. Behind this building flows two river and there are Klang river and Gombak river. In the middle of where those two rivers meet stands The Masjid Jamek Mosque. This mosque was designed by the same architect.
